Though decorating any tree is fine. I once had a friend who didn't have a Christmas tree (not even a plastic one) who draped some tinsel over this dead twig in a pot (it had been a plant once but seems they forgot to water it, silly buggers) and that was their Christmas tree XD
The main thing is to have a feast in the soul, a tree and tinsel are not so important :)
Tree decorating is fun though XD But yes for us the gathering is the most important part, especially considering we don't celebrate Christmas the same way as the rest of our family :)
