Dunrobin Castle is for the Birds
A tour of Dunrobin Castle Scotland
That’s right it’s definitely for the birds! Birds of prey that is! Heading down the northern Highland coast in Scotland on the A9 from Wick toward Inverness, Dunrobin Castle awaits providing an interesting break in the long drive. If you do stop, make sure that you don’t miss the amazing falconry demonstration.
The castle was built in medieval times for the Earl of Sutherland. Major additions were done to it in the mid 1800’s. The building served as a naval hospital during the World War I and later housed a boarding school. Now it is open to the public for tours.
Approaching the west entrance of the Castle we notice several tour buses parked up front. It's a popular spot.
Also parked out front was this antique Zeppelin motor car. Zeppelins were manufacture in pre-World War II Germany. They were extremely heavy and required a special license to drive them back in their day.
On display in the cafe inside the castle was this steam fire engine.
Close up of the engine.
The view of the gardens from the castle. The North Sea is in the background
The edge of the garden from the back of the castle
An arched pathway in the garden

The falconry demonstration
This was the highlight of our day. The demonstration was both entertaining and informative. Besides falcons, the resident falconer demonstrated hawks and owls.
The falcon read to launch
The hawk and handler
The hawk getting a meaty treat
The owl on its perch ready to fly
The handler has the owl land on our friend Ray's head
Good thing Ray was wearing his hat
Ray looks relieved as the owl flies away.
A trusting person in the audience gets to feed the owl a treat
That ends our day at Dunrobin. I hope you enjoyed the visit.
