William Dobson, baptized February 24, 1611 - buried October 28, 1646), one of the first significant British artists, according to his contemporary John Aubrey, "the most excellent painter of those that gave birth to England."

The future artist was born in London, in the family of the lawyer William Dobson, and was given to training William Peake (English William Peake). Probably later he worked in the studio of the artist Francis Klein. Dobson, as the researchers suggest, had access to the royal collection of paintings and copied the works of Titian and Anthony Van Dyck, the court painter of King Charles I.
