Baselitz Georg (German Georg Baselitz, real name Hans-Georg Kern, born January 23, 1938, Deutschebazelitz) is a German painter, graphic artist and sculptor, one of the most expensive living artists. Neoekspressionist, one of the founders of the style of "New Wild".
Hans-Georg Kern was born in 1938 in the family of an elementary school teacher. He started painting in 1955, taking private lessons.
In 1961 he changed his name to Georg Baselitz, in memory of his native city. Together with another young artist from Saxony, Eugen Schönebeck, he also organized an exhibition "Pandemonium-1" in the Wilmersdorf district that same year. At this exhibition the artists proclaimed a manifesto, which opposed their work to the then dominant abstract art. Baselitz always gravitated toward objective, figurative motives, especially appreciated the principle of art-provocation, depicting figures sometimes in such provocatively exhibitionistic poses, that, for example, in 1963 during a personal exhibition of the artist in the gallery Werner & Katz in Berlin, there was a scandal. Two of his paintings "The Big Night in the tub" ("The Big Night Down The Drain", 1962/1963) and "Naked Man" ("Naked Man", 1962) were banned from showing as obscene.
Baselitz served as professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and West Berlin's Higher Art School.
