Ford Madox Brown was born April 16, 1821 in Calais, in the family of a retired ship treasurer, Scotsman by nationality. In 1836 he went to study in Europe. First in Bruges, where he took drawing lessons from one of David's disciples, and later moved to Antwerp, where he studied in the studio of Gustav Vappers. Here he mastered a variety of artistic techniques - mural, oil painting, watercolor, pastel, lithography and other types of engraving. Already the first of his big picture "The Execution of Mary of Scotland" (1840) was a demonstration of the mature skill of the artist.
