Jan Bruegel the Elder (1568-1625) the magnificent unique artist has entered a history of painting under a nickname "Velvet" or "Flower". It is believed that the nickname is because of the artist's passion for wearing luxurious expensive clothes, and also because of the special warm color and "velvety" of the picturesque texture of his paintings.
Jan was the second son of Peter Bruegel the Elder (nicknamed "The Man"), the brother of Peter Bruegel the Younger (nicknamed "Hell") and the father of Jan Brueghel the Younger.

A famous Flemish painter. He was born in Brussels. Originated from the great dynasty of Flemish painters Brueghel; his father was Peter Bruegel the Elder. He worked in Rome, in Antwerp, in Prague, in Brussels. The creative heritage of Jan Brueghel the Elder includes many magnificent landscapes with small, animated pictures of human figures, biblical and allegorical subjects. Jan Bruegel the Elder is famous for his detailed images of flowers in the form of still lifes or flower wreaths. Jan Bruegel also wrote a large number of paintings on mythological themes and allegories, for example, "Four Elements and Five Feelings" (1617-1618, Museo del Prado, Madrid, together with his friend Peter Paul Rubens).

Exotic and ordinary animals are mixed in this paradise garden, lavishly planted with lush plants and flowers. The main task of the artist was to create a mysterious imaginary landscape, so he deprived Adam and Eve of their roles in the plot to emphasize their surroundings.
A limited choice of flora and fauna may seem amusing at the present time, but Brueghel managed to breathe a fairy spirit into a forest glade. The artist's depth of feelings and sensitivity to the natural environment helped develop the great tradition of Dutch landscape painting of the 17th century. His highly perfected, honed manner of painting floral still lifes, landscapes and paintings with the image of Paradise deserved him the nickname Velvet.
