Brancusi, Constantin (1876-1957), Romanian sculptor, was born in the village of Hobitsa in Romania in 1876. After studying at art schools in Craiova and Bucharest, he went to Paris and in 1904 entered the School of Fine Arts, which soon left on the advice of Rodin. A few years later, unsatisfied with the realistic methods of interpreting the form, Brancusi defeated his sculptural group Crossing the Black Sea and began working on creating his own original style of sculptural abstraction. He was one of the first who started moving in this direction. In the works of Brancusi, Cubism and other styles of pictorial abstraction are less influenced than in the works of other sculptors. His work has had a significant impact on the development of modern sculpture. Brancusi excludes from his works all realistic details, cutting shapes to the simplest geometric essence that he could imagine. He was interested in rhythmic repetitions. It is felt in such works as the Infinite Column and the statues of Adam and Eve. Brancusi accentuated the texture of the sculptural materials he used, giving preference to the smoothly polished surfaces of stone and metal, or the roughness of a rough-hewn, cracked tree. He often intensified the inverse effects with contrasting contrasts, for example, exhibited a smooth marble head of egg-shaped form on a pillow of dark velvet or placed polished to shine metal or alabaster fish on an oval mirror pedestal.

Brancusi died in Paris on March 16, 1957.
