Pierre Bonnard, the second child of Eugene Bonnard, a senior official of the War Ministry, and Alsace native Elizabeth Mertzdorf, was born on October 3, 1867 in the suburbs of Paris Fontaine-o-Roz. Together with his older brother Charles and his younger sister Andre, with whom he was particularly close, the future artist spends his childhood in Fontenay. Every summer, the family visits their estate "Le Clos" in Gran Lemp, the department of Dauphin, where Pierre finds the first sources of inspiration.
