For many Americans Mayberry is what Germans call “eine heile Welt,” which could be translated as an ideal or perfect world.

Mayberry was a fictitious town in which two television series took place. The most famous was “The Andy Griffith Show.” It was on TV for eight years in the 1960s, but has been seen in syndication (reruns) for the past 54 years. It is a sleepy little town where everyone seems to know each other, nefarious characters tend to be outsiders, and simple “small town” values are demonstrably superior to the clueless outside experts who seek to change their way of life.

Mayberry-esque Ruhpolding

Experiencing small-town Germany as an American, over the years I've known lots of places that are Mayberry-esque. Things have and are changing – that's another topic I'll leave to others to explore. In any case, spring has finally sprung and I want to leave you with a final post on Ruhpolding, which in the off-season is a sleepy little idyllic town.
