Another World

in #photography8 years ago

People dream of strange and extraordinary worlds on other planets, but you don't need to leave planet Earth to experience a strange new world.

All you need to do is visit a coral reef and try scuba diving. The first time I experienced this was during a vacation on an island in the Maldives. After five days of classes we dove down 25 meters (about 80 feet) to a sunken boat. It was rusted out and filled with hundreds of small orange/gold fish, they were completely unpreturbed as I swam into their midst – the swarm simply shifted, made room, and then close up again.

Yes it was Earth, but the landscapes and creatures were strangely shaped. Some fish were glistening metallic, others were luminously colorful. The coral seemed like vividly colorful rounded rock formations, with branches shaped something like broccoli or cauliflower. One felt completely accepted in this strange new world, the inhabitants seemed indifferent or oblivious to our presence unless we provoked them. In any case, it's was definitely one the most memorable experiences I've ever had.

I happened to be out and I passed by a group of horses, and luckily I had my camera with me. They are such magnificent creatures, powerful yet elegant, graceful, and beautiful. Rather than simply presenting them in their natural beauty, today I want to release-my-inner-hippie and try to convey a sense of the thrill I experienced the first time I dove on a coral reef.

#Morgenseiten was created by @shortcut as a way to share your morning stream of consciousness, and he also came up with #releaseyourinnerhippie explore things in a less serious, experimental, or flippy way.

A swarm of seahorses on a coral reef of weed. If this isn't the satisfaction of every hippie's dream, then I don't know ;-) Great stuff!

;-) Actually "Great stuff" is every hippie's dream

I actually feel inspired and would like to create a short video using
your images and @katharsisdrill's music (if I find the time). Would you mind giving me permission to do so? (You could for example release them under a Creative Commons license, like CC-BY).

What a fun idea, I would love it!

Haha, lol :-)

The inner hippie release party!

All these crazy colours you use :) I enjoy the Bavaria pictures with the corrosive colours, but the purple horse and the purple grass ones are really great (inner hippie great!)

Thanks :-)

I'm so glad @shortcut came up with #releaseyourinnerhippie -- it opens up a world of possibilities.

I have been working on that release project for so many years - Strange how many inhibitions we have when it is actually just sounds and images :)

Man I know what you mean, that is strange when you think about it. Yet I too am way too inhibited to share my music.

At least I have my pseudonym to hide behind. We might need a #findyourinnerpunker to get you to post music :)

It's my own fault, I didn't put in the effort to get my hands to the level where they could play what my mind is hearing.

Is is like that with you and drawing, are you able to draw your thoughts, or is it just a close approximation? What artists like you and @shortcut do is like magic for me :-)

That was actually what the inner punker is all about. I remember the idea that was part of the punk community that the concept of "quality" was somehow oppressive and that everybody had an equal right to express themselves :) As you probably have noticed I was never that impressed by that idea, and I know just enough about you to believe that the inner punker might be lost on you too. None the less I have used it sometimes when I changed style and even more often when I changed media... just thinking: "what the hell..."

I must admit, I associated punk more with anger, resentment, and non-conformity -- but you're right, the rejection of quality and the embracing of freedom was also a very big part of it.

Back in the punk era I was still more drawn to the Southern music scene, but there were a few groups who were at least "punk adjacent." An example was Joe Ely, a Texan whom the Clash invited on their tour.

But on the Southern scene, even if it was loud and raw, they were generally excellent players. Remember this?

You don't need a coral reef, exotic as this may be. All you need is an ant hill around the corner and a few hours to observe it. If that doesn't awe you, I don't know what will.

It's hard to walk or swim among the arts, but you are right, the are many "worlds" in our world ;-)

You guys have had the party, may I joint the party too @roused?, thank you

your story reminds me while on vacation to Sabang Island-Indonesia, I do not dive, just look through the glass, really amazing, colored fish greet me, I feel like in heaven, you've been to Indonesia @roused?

No I haven't been there, but I looked at a video of Sabang Island, wow, that's so beautiful!

wait for the opportunity to come to Sabang, and we wait for you, you will see not only the heaven of the world, you will also see the culture and hospitality of the community

Thinking about splurging on a more professional camera, what are you using?
