So many brave (informed) & dutiful (uninformed) service people gave their lives in the first few days of the monumental catastrophe that occurred at Chernobyl. Their abandoned clothing is still highly radioactive to this day.
The people at Pripyat had little chance to save their health, let alone possessions, and many children, who are more susceptible to radiation due to more rapid cell division/growth at their stage in life suffered elevated rates of childhood leukemia, developed horrible tumors, and often had to be operated on without anaesthetic because there were precious little funds allocated to medical supplies, among other related consequences.
Chernobyl & Pripyat stand as lasting monuments to many aspects of human society.
