The Japanese volcano that spits lightning

The photo corresponds to the volcano Sakurajima, located in the island Kyushu, to the south of the country, and is one of the rare occasions in which an erupting volcano in which also lightning appears. Why this phenomenon happens? It is a mystery, but the image that leaves us, spread by NASA, is simply spectacular.
