in #photography7 years ago

The inaugural Historic Photographer of the Year award spotlights the very finest historic places and cultural sites globally, capturing famous and the obscure in the form of some stunning photos. Here’s a look at some winning pictures along with some shortlisted entries.

OVERALL WINNER: RAF NOCTON HALL AND US MILITARY HOSPITAL, LINCOLNSHIRE, UK
By Matt Emmett
This 400 m long corridor forms part of an old hospital which was last used by U.S. military stationed in the U.K. during the first Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm). The site was loaned to American forces in 1984 to treat injured soldiers flown back from Iraq, but only 35 patients were treated there. The site was handed back to the U.K. in 1995 and it remains in a derelict state to date.

PUBLIC VOTE WINNER: JEDBURGH ABBEY, UK
By Jenna Johnston
This photo of the 12th century Augustinian abbey, Jedburgh, was taken on a class trip in 2011. That class, and that trip, sparked my enduring love for medieval architecture.

SHORTLISTED: KNIGHTS TEMPLAR POOR WARD, MALTA
By Clare Louise Adams
The Knights Hospitallers is set in what used to be the holy infirmary and the historical hospital from where the knights operated. They were known for providing the best medical service available at that time to the injured and sick people. Today, it is used for guided tours and for wedding banqueting.

SHORTLISTED: SHAH MOSQUE, ISFAHAN, IRAN
By Pamela Jones
Rugs ready and waiting for Friday prayers at the mosque.

SHORTLISTED: TRAIN CEMETERY, BOLIVIA
By Pamela Jones
Just outside Uyuni, Bolivia trains were abandoned decades ago and left to rot at 11,995 feet (3,656 m). Built by the British, the railway transported minerals to the Pacific Coast until the mining industry collapsed in the 1940s.
