Ratel's photos #34 Forest Birds-16
The great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major)
The most common of woodpeckers.
In the photo there is a female woodpecker. The male is distinguished by a "red cap".
Traces of a woodpecker are easy to learn - near a tree full of chips.
Also, I noticed that they often descend from the trees to the ground, and wander in thickets in search of insects, which they eat in the summer. In autumn, they switch to vegetable food.
The voice of woodpeckers is easy to recognize, it has a melancholy tone. Woodpeckers are quite noisy. They shout for any reason. I especially like it when they "grumble" wandering on the grass.

It may be common in Eurasia, but I have never seen one. I like the red cast to the vent.
Yes, male woodpeckers are beautiful :)
