phosphenes

the sun dappled through
the gnarled branches
onto the forest floor
and danced in black ink ribbons
behind her closed eyelids
it was as if she were
looking down onto a cloudy red sea,
wading through blood-warm water,
observing how the black volcanic earth
swells and furrows around her bare toes
