Ornithologist for a day: Bird hunt on the Island Heligoland - Ornithologe für einen Tag: Vogeljagd auf Helgoland (ENG/GER)

On this little island one of the biggest single non-nuclear bombings detonations in history took place. During the second World War II the British detonated 6,700 tonnes of explosives on Heligoland in 1947 (hyperlink leads to Wikipedia) in order to destroy the German sea fortress. So you might have heard of Heligoland and the operation "Big Bang" before.

But the Island has more to offer than traces of the war history, so if you ever should visit Hamburg or Cuxhafen in Germany make sure to find time for a day trip to Heligoland. You can of course stay there over night too if you want to expand your visit and want to enjoy the little isle once the tourist boats set off. The island is famous for its characteristic red sedimentary rock. Due to its tax-exempt status - the island is excluded from the EU VAT area - most visitors will not leave without a few bottles of liquor and tabacco.

Helgoland ist einen Besuch wert und hat mehr zu bieten als Spuren der Kriegsgeschichte. Wer in Hamburg oder Cuxhafen zu Besuch ist, sollte sich einen Tag für einen Bootsausflug nach Helgoland nehmen. Wer die Insel auch abends, nachdem die Boote der Gäste ablegten, in Ruhe genießen will, sollte über Nacht bleiben. Dank der geologischen Sonderheit des roten Feuersteins ist die Insel berühmt. Und dank des steuerfreien Status, die Insel gehört weder zum Steuergebiet Deutschlands noch der Europäischen Zollunion an, wird der Besuch von Vielen auch gerne zum Einkauf von Alkohol oder Tabak genutzt.
