Iridescence

Undoubtedly, one of the characteristics that makes hummingbirds a unique group is their plumage, due to the variety of their ornaments crests, throats and long tails of various colors and shapes. Perhaps the most interesting thing is that most of the colors in their feathers are not produced exclusively by pigments, as in almost all birds, but by refraction of the light that affects them, which is known as iridescence. However, unlike other birds with iridescent feathers such as quetzales, the iridescence of hummingbird feathers is a product of the modification of the structure of the feathers and the number and thickness of layers of air and pigments.
