What is infrared photography and how you can easily get started
Back in 2008, when I had my first DSLR (A Nikon D70s), I was lucky enough to find some tutorials about how to go about shooting that amazing type of photography within the Infrared spectrum.
One of the things I had to buy, was an IR filter, which I would place on the lens thread. I had to set my white balance to greens (using the filter), and then I would set my camera on a tripod, set the shot without the IR filter (it's impossible to see anything through it when it's on the lens, because it's so dark) and then proceed to shoot an extended shutter photograph, like the one I posted here.
I would have continued doing it, except that any newer model of DSLR (it started with the Nikon D80, Nikon's model right after my D70s), implemented an IR protection filter for their sensor, so any camera after that, would NOT be sensitive to the IR spectrum.
Nevertheless, I found out some time ago, about some people that actually can take your DSLR body, and not only make it able to see the IR spectrum but actually do a full conversion, so you don't even need to use an IR filter on your lens.
However, this also means that it will ONLY shoot IR photography. So if you have an extra camera body, and you would like to have that as part of the type of photography you can shoot, it's something you might want to consider.
They also SELL converted bodies.
Anyway, with that, you can actually shoot photos like you would regular photographs.
DISCLAIMER: I don't represent the people I'm about to refer, nor do I have any contact with them, and I cannot be held liable for any issues you might have if you ever want to try their services. I myself have NOT purchased one of their camera bodies or paid for a conversion. But I know people who have, and they have very good things to say about them, and most of all, the pictures to show for their investment!

Good luck! Hope this put you on the path to some great IR photography!
