Today our walk with my son was crowned with a wonderful find!

Glad to introduce you to a stag beetle! Scientific name Lucanus cervus.

You probably know the males stag beetle have enlarged mandibles and are larger than in the females.

It is interesting to know how rare these insects are.

From Wikipedia:

Lucanus cervus is listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN Red List. Although this species is widely distributed in Europe, it is in significant decline in the north and central part of its range and future trends of European forests will pose serious threats to this species, thus making the species close to qualifying for Vulnerable.

So we did not take him home.
We released the beetle.
I hope this contributed to the preservation of this species!
