Blast furnaces and tons of steel - Landschaftspark Duisburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
Hi all!
Last weekend I had the chance to visit the Landschaftspark Duisburg in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, an old industrial site turned into a scenic park. It is part of the heritage of the Ruhrpott area, which was the industrial center of Germany.
Times have changed. Nowadays the coal mines are closed down and steel is produced elsewhere, so the smelteries are disused, too. But the remnants of this time are still present.
Today the old industrial complex which has been abandoned in the mid-80s is surrounded by a 230 hectare park area organized around the existing roads, railways, sewage canals, and plants. The gigantic industrial structures are impressive.
It's definitively worth a visit.
Enough talking, here are some photos at daylight.
The first three show parts of the blast furnaces.
Change of perspective...
Strange vehicles on rails...
They had a supercharger the size of a building running! Actually, it was a gigantic air supply to fan the flames used for melting the raw iron.
Another brick in the wall?
The area is a well-visited spot and very popular for photoshootings. There is a special atmosphere around these tons of steel and rust, kind of a feeling inbetween roughness and nostalgia.
