Weird Wasp

in #photography7 years ago

We saw this strange little wasp the other day, loitering with intent near what looked like an ant hill in a forest in the east of The Netherlands.

It did some digging into the anthill, so it could be a parasitic wasp, or maybe it was just hunting.

I have never seen a wasp with such big eyes before; the yellow jaws also stand out.

Does anyone here know what species this could be?

Its like those little dolls with big heads and eyes :p
What is that orange stuff around?

I'm not sure, it looked like a pile of coarse sand, or maybe something organic, like some ants collect to build a nest.
