Three unusual grasshoppers

in #photography7 years ago

This elegant poser looked like most other grasshoppers to me, but it turned out to be the increasingly rare large marsh grasshopper (Stethophyma grossum):

This one is called short-winged conehead (Conocephalus dorsalis). I took this photo after an unelegant landing:

The next one isn't particularly rare, but it is very big, over 3.5cm (1.4") without the wings. It's called the great green bush-cricket (Tettigonia viridissima), and it has an almost perfect colour match to the plants it sits on:

Judging from this photo, they are very protective of their flowers 8-):

Thanks for watching!

Amazing you even saw the Tettigonia, it blends so well. Very nice collection of g-hoppers here.

We used to collect grasshoppers when we were kids. They "spit" a tar-like black substance when handled, which is quite disgusting.

And hard to remove?
I haven't experienced that, as I have never touched them, apart from the ones that landed on top of me. Thanks for the warning!

I can't remember how hard it was to remove. That was many years ago. We were kids, so we probably wiped it off on our clothes!

8-) Didn't we all?

I remember when I was a child we love to go after with grasshopper hopping on our school ground. Nice photos.

Thank you.
