The Emperor: two so-so photos

in #photography9 years ago

I try to avoid posting sub-par photos, but from some attempts, even the best shots aren't up to standard.

Still, when the subject is important enough for some reason, mediocre photos will have to do. So, it is with some uneasiness I present two photos of the rather rare and very big blue emperor (Anax imperator) I saw last weekend.

It wouldn't let me get close, and after an hour of trying and running after it, this is what I brought home:

Olympus Stylus 1s, 300mm, ISO200, f8, 1/200s

These dragonflies are big; their body length is about 8cm (3.2)". They are the biggest dragonflies out there and they will chase away or eat all other dragonflies they see. This one is resting after just such an action:

Olympus Stylus 1s, 300mm, ISO200, f8, 1/125s

Thanks for watching!

That does look like a dragonfly that's comfortable at the top of the food chain! Your second image really shows off its stout wings. That is no delicate creature!

Вы делаете талантливую макросъемку!

Спасибо, но я не доволен этими фотографиями. Фотографии должны быть лучше.

Все впереди)

Good stuff! Beautiful blue color. How do you know the species and such of the insects?

I look them up, and have been doing so for years, so I usually recognise them in the field now.

Consistency is such a simple path to success. Well done!

Great colour! I look forward to your next photos of this dragonfly!

Thanks.
I'll be trying again this afternoon. I'm hoping for a good photo this time.

Glad to hear it, you can do it!

Did it.

I think the photos are lovely!

Thank you.
