Rare wildflower
This flower is becoming increasingly rare in The Netherlands, so I was glad to see a few days ago that it was doing well in at least one place:
Olympus Stylus 1s, 42mm, ISO125, f5.6, 1/160s
Its goes by the strange name of devil's-bit scabious (Succisa pratensis), blauwe knoop in Dutch.
Wikipedia says:
"Species of [this plant] were used to treat scabies, and other afflictions of the skin including sores caused by the Bubonic Plague. [...] The short black root was in folk tales bitten off by the devil, angry at the plant's ability to cure these ailments, in anger against the Virgin Mary, or as part of some 'devilish plot'."
Its colour seems to depend on light condistions or soil, as I have also seen them like this:
Olympus XZ-1, 28mm, ISO400, f8, 1/100s
It could also be, of course, that I have got the species wrong in either of these photos.
Thanks for watching!
It looks the same on both photos (besides the colour). Pretty one :)
