Ice, not Art

But what does the photo mean? Well, nothing much; as far as I am concerned it is just a nice photo. What it means, if anything, is up to the viewer.

But what did the photographer want to express? Nothing whatsoever. I saw something that struck me for no reason I can make explicit, and made a photo as best I could to capture it.

But how was the photo conceived? Well, judging from the tracks and the hair, a roe deer passed under the barbed wire, lost some hair, which caught some snow, which partly melted and formed a drop of water. That's all. No forethought on my part.

Photos that need a page of text to explain their deeper meaning or the photographer's intent, or to emphasize that they are art, aren't very good and expressive photos, now are they? One might as well just show a page of metablah and leave the photo out altogether.

Sorry about that rant, but sometimes all this arty-farty babble I see next to photos gets on my nerves. Just shut up and show the photo, maybe with a little story, but without the esoteric metababble designed to make it more arty. If it is a photo that needs text to make it interesting, simply don't show the photo at all.

Haha this post reminds me of a post I did a few days ago about what I learnt from going to art school, I agree with it all! And I really love the photograph too!

I missed it, just read it, and it's great. To the readers of this comment: it is here. Go read it.

Awww thank you ! And thanks for the link too!! :)

...and a wonderful, though meaningless, photo it is! :-)

8-) Thanks.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. Well written and said. When I see those fable attempts to explain with sterile metaphors a bad photograph, I just know that the author is just insecure about his own work.

I have nothing against augmenting a photograph with your own vision, as words can, sometimes, complement it. But to make a novel out of it...

wow you captured a great moment my friend..! i like it....a nice and minimalistic composition it looks great...

have a nice day...:)

I enjoy hearing what the artist saw that drew them to a shot... sometimes it may be obvious, but often times it is not.

"I just loved the way they used the barbed wire like an empty canvas and let the rust eat itself into the overall design with such devastating spontaneity. Augmented with the casually left hair and nature's icy touch it becomes art, neo-functional mannerism, cerebral but oblique."

Just kidding. I get your point. I just think it isn't a very good photo if it needs text to augment it, especially when that text is just esoteric arty-farty twaddle.
