Another species!

They just keep appearing. This is a black-tailed skimmer (Orthetrum cancellatum), gewone oeverlibel in Dutch. Young males are yellow, but get a dusty-looking blue coating (called pruinescence by biologists) when they get older:

This is a female, or maybe a very young male:

This last one got stuck in the grass. Sometimes they can't take off because there is not enough room for their wings. You can hear them trying to escape from far away; they make a very loud whirring sound. I liberated this one, of course.

Sorry about the great many photos of dragonflies. Can't help it, it is the season, you see.

You can never have enough dragonfiles. Or dragons, for that matter.

Nicely done! These things are awesome!

I agree @creutzy ~ they are awesome and very majestic beings <3 :)

Ah...those colors they come in. So bright, so beautiful, and that Stylus 1s is rather impressive. I just yearn for a light good camera, lugging around a heavy camera isn't that fun. But I do have my sights set on a Sony a7...

No apologies needed, the series is fascinating. You are the dragonfly whisperer...

How do you go about identifying your dragonflies? I have a dragonfly identification field guide for the western US. Do you use a field guide for your region?

Online guides for The Netherlands, mostly, and some help from local experts.
Libellennet is a Dutch guide, but, appropriately, it is in Dutch. My GF does most of the looking-up, to be honest.

Ой, стрекозюльки, мило как ) У вас отличное макро!

Спасибо!
Это помогает, когда это вид, который любит сидеть на месте.

Dragonflies are fascinating to watch. Their double wings let them hover like a helicopters, fly backwards and who knows what else. I'm sure engineers have studied them for making aircraft.

You are a professional in dragonflies :)

I wish 8-).

Your dragonflies are always perfect. Resteemed.

Thank you!
