A spectacular caterpillar in high resolution

in #photography6 years ago (edited)

I don't usually post photos in high resolutions, as they load too slowly and we are all looking at screens anyway, but I thought this one might fit well into somebody's collection. It also allows a closer look at some details, if you manage to open it in the right software.

The photo is exactly as I prepare my photos for 25 x 38cm (10 x 15") prints; it is a little over 8.5 megapixels, and yes, it will load more slowly than you are used to:

It is the 4cm (1.6") caterpillar of the equally spectactular swallowtail (Papilio machaon), koninginnenpage in Dutch, that Faltermann posted about here a few days ago.

It is sitting on a carrot top, which they like a lot.

To further slow down your loading times, here's another spectacular one in high resolution. It is the caterpillar of the pale tussock (Calliteara pudibunda), meriansborstel in Dutch:

These are not bad results for hand-held shots with such a small camera, but then, I prefer smaller cameras with smaller sensors for this kind of macro work as they give me more control over the depth of field.

Some people feel photos of two insect eyes in a field of blur are very artistic, but I always try to get the whole animal and a little of the context into focus. Depth of field needs to be controlled, and not always be reduced to the minimum possible because arty.

I didn't mean to say that when I started writing this post, but it suddenly came out.

Thanks for watching!

Wow what an amazing caterpillar!

It is, isn't it? Hard to imagine the young ones look like bird droppings.

No complaints here. Outstanding.
