WHERE LAND MEETS SEA

Making pictures on the edge of the sea.

I love to fly over and around the sea because of the opportunities to make great pictures.
The edge of the sea where the land ends and the ocean begins is often a good location to find memorable images.
There is a rich variety of shorelines from rocky headlands to sandy beaches and the patterns created by wave action on sand, rocks and water are all useful elements to incorporate together with the colours of light showing through different water depths and the dappled pattern of light passing through a ruffled surface.

Most of the time my camera is looking forward or just a little downwards but shooting vertically can also result in striking images.
Here are just a few.
1.Waves on a sandy shore

A vertical shot of wave on a sandy beach provides the simplest composition but the subtle graduation as the water colour changes with depth and the texture made by light passing through ripples can provide complexity. Add a wave or two with white foam and the contrasting bands of dry and wet sand and you have a picture. Rotate your Phantom for a pleasing composition and you have something simple but elegant.

                                                                                                          2.Beach Rocks

Here is another simple image looking down at the interaction of waves breaking on a few small rocks just off a sandy shore. See the sand being swirled by the waves and the lacy pattern of foam being washed away from the rocks. What initially appears to be a simple image has a lot of detail for your eyes to take in.

                                                                                                         3.Rocky Cove

This picture, introduces the interface between land and sea and has a lot of detail for the eye to linger over. The repeating patterns of the waves are an attractive element with the white water of the wave crests giving way to lacy foam and shades of clear, glassy blue water behind. The texture of the hard rocky shore makes a strong contrast to the softness of the water and the greens of trees and shrubs complete the picture.

                                                                                     4.Rocky Cove - a closer look

Coming lower down on the same rocky cove reveals great detail of glassy water between waves. The way the ocean breaks down the hard rocks over time is revealed and you can see the way the smaller pieces are washed further than the larger pieces. The sharp angular texture of the Pandanus trees provides a sharp contrast against the softer look of the shrubs
5.Dolphins

When flying around the shoreline be aware of your surroundings.
These dolphins were swimming just a little way offshore and made for a lucky grab shot.
