Mesjid merupakan rumah tempat ibadah bagi umat Muslim. Mesjid artinya tempat sujud, dan mesjid berukuran kecil disebutkan Musholla. Dalam sejarah islam, mesjid turut memegang peranan dalam aktivitas sosial masyarakat hingga kemiliteran.

Bagi umat muslim yang sudah baligh atau sudah dewasa maka diwajibkan atasnya untuk menunaikan sholat lima waktu dalam sehari semalam. Dan khusus bagi laki-laki juga diwajibkan menunaikan sholat hari jumat yang dilakukan berjamah di mesjid.

Mesjid juga berfungsi untuk hal-hal yang lainnya yang bersifat forum, misalnya rapat atau musyawarah, melakukan dakwah dan lain-lainnya. Jadi mesjid ini bukan semata-mata untuk melakukan sholat lima waktu.
Pada zaman Rasul dulu, mesjid juga dipergunakan untuk baitul mal. Untuk membantu orang-orang miskin di waliyah tersebut. Tapi dengan perkembangan zaman yang terus berkembang, hal-hal yang bersifat perekonomian masyarakat sudah dipilah atau dipisahkan oleh pemerintahan negara masing-masing.

Fungsi-fungsi lainnya tentang mesjid.

1. Sebagai Universitas Kehidupan.
2. Sebagai Wadah Penanaman, Pembinaan dan Peningkatan Keimanan.
3. Sebagai Wadah Pengembangan dan Manajemen Diri.
4. Sebagai Wadah Penyucian dan Pengobatan Jiwa.
5. Sebagai Wadah Sosial (Public Services).
6. Sebagai Wadah Manajemen Ekonomi Umat.
7. Sebagai Wadah Perajut dan Penguatan Ukhuwwah Islamiyah.
8. Sebagai Wadah Keselamatan Hari Kiamat dan Jalan Membangun Rumah di Surga.

Mesjid bukan hanya semata-mata berfungsi untuk kebaikan dunia, tapi juga jalan keselamatan dihari kiamat. Dan jalan pembangunan rumah di syurga bagi kaum muslimin. Rasul SAW bersabda :

"Tujuh golongan yang akan mendapat naungan Allah pada hari (kiamat) yang tidak ada naungan kecuali naungan-Nya. Imam yang adil, pemuda yang dibesarkan dalam ibadah kpd Allah, seseorang yang hatinya terpaut dengan Masjid, dua orang yang saling mencintai karena Allah, bersama dan berpisah karena Allah, seseorang yang diajak berbuat serong wanita terhormat dan cantik, lalu ia menolaknya dan berkata : Tidak, aku takut pada Allah, seseorang yang besedekah lalu ia sembunyikan dan apa yang diinfakkan tangan kanannya tidak diketahui tangan kirinya dan seseorang yang berzikir pada Allah dengan sembunyi, lalu mengucur airmatanya (karena takut pada-Nya)." (HR. Imam Muslim).

Pentingnya masjid bagi umat Islam bagaikan jantung bagi manusia, karena dari masjidlah Rasulullah membangun peradaban Islam dan karakter umat Islam yang sebagai khalifah di muka bumi.
