this photo was taken when he returned to his hometown in batam visit his family who live there.

Batam City is an island located very strategically because it is located in international shipping lane. The city is also so close to the State of Singapore and Malaysia. Batam is one of the fastest growing cities in Indonesia. When it was built in the early 1970s the city occupied only about 6,000 inhabitants, but now has a population of 713,960 inhabitants.

History Batam Island was inhabited the first time by people with the name of Malays as a strait since the year 231 AD. The island that once served as the field of struggle of Admiral Hang Nadim against the invaders was used by the government in the 1960s as a petroleum logistics base on Sambu Island. In the 1970s, with the initial goal of making Batam Indonesia as Singapore, according to Presidential Decree number 41 year 1973, Batam Island is designated as working environment of industrial area supported by Batam Island Industrial Development Authority or better known as Batam Authority Body as a driver of Batam development Along with the rapid development of Batam Island, in the 1980s, based on Government Regulation No. 34 of 1983, Batam sub-district area which is part of Riau Islands district, increased its status to Batam Municipality which has duty in running the administration of government and society as well supporting the development of the Batam Authority. In the Reformation era in the late 1990s, with Law No. 53 of 1999, Batam administrative municipality changed its status to autonomous area of ​​Batam City Government to carry out government and development functions by involving the Batam Authority Body.

Geographical

The city which is part of Riau Islands Province has a land area of 715 km ² or about 115% of the area of Singapore, while the total area of the total reaches 1,570.35 km ². Batam City has tropical climate with average temperature 26 to 34 bderajat celsius. The city has a hilly and deserted plain. The soil is less fertile red soil.

Tribes
Batam City community is a heterogeneous society consisting of various tribes and groups. Some of the dominant tribes are Malay, Minang, Batak, Makassar, Jawa, Flores, Tionghoa and others. Until 2006, Batam has a population of more than 700,000 people and has a stable population growth rate. In the period of 2001 to 2005 has an average population growth rate of 6 percent per year.

Religion
Islam is the majority religion in Batam City. The Grand Mosque of Batam, located in the center of the city, is adjacent to the main square, the mayor's office and the local parliament office become a symbol of the religious society of Batam. Christianity and Catholicism are also widely embraced by the people of Batam, especially those from Batak and Flores tribes. Buddhism is mostly adopted by Chinese citizens.

Language
Indonesian is used as a daily language of instruction. Regional languages are also used by residents from other regions, such as Minang language, Batak language, Javanese, Makassarese, and also Chinese. This is so because Batam is where various tribes meet.

Economy
Batam City economic growth is higher than the national economic growth rate makes this region a mainstay for spur economic growth nationally and for the Riau Islands Province. Various sectors of economic drivers include the communications sector, electricity, water and gas sector, banking sector, industrial sector and shipping, trade and service sector is the pulse of batam city economy which is not only the consumption of Batam and Indonesia but also export for other countries . The existence of economic activities in the city is also in order to increase employment and community welfare. Batam City Government as the executor of the development of Batam City together with the House of Representatives of Batam City and the participation of the Batam Authority Agency in continuing the development, has a commitment in promoting the growth of investment and economy of Batam City, this is evidenced by the memorandum of understanding of the three agencies, it is expected to create sustainable development of Batam City. Batam, together with Bintan and Karimun has now become a Special Economic Zone. With this is expected to increase investment in Batam which ultimately aimed to improve the welfare of the community. Economic activity is also strongly supported by the existence of many industrial areas in Batam which is one of the main source of livelihood of Batam residents.

Access to the city of Batam can be reached by air and sea. Through the air line, Batam can be reached via Hang Nadim International Airport which serves direct flight routes from many cities in Indonesia, such as Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan, Padang etc. Batam also has four international ferry ports connecting it with Singapore and Malaysia. Batam as a tourism city, presents various forms of tourism facilities such as sea and beach tourism, art and cultural tourism, shopping, economic and conference tours, and humanitarian tours.
