There were a lot of lead mines to the west of where I live. Mineral Point had many Cornish families who emigrated to work the mines here in Wisconsin.

You know, it is very interesting. I read somewhere that the American accent was strongly influenced by the Cornish migrants. Sounds about right when you think about it. It's a small world after all?

That sounds totally reasonable, but we are such a hodgepodge here that I would have a hard time finding someone who spoke with an 'American' accent. The area where I live had a lot of Cornish immigrants but also a lot of German Swiss and Norwegian settlers. And I still often detect those accents when people speak.

How weird is that. I suppose that people keep their accents a lot longer than we think. My parents are both Irish but I haven't got a trace of an Irish accent as you can see in my videos. London is also a hodge podge of nationalities and where we grew up (near the docks) there were a lot of people from just about everywhere.

meaning full photography. thanks for share.

You would think they would have gotten it all out in less than a 1,000 yrs :-)

There was/is a lot of it down there still. Just uneconomic to get it out apparently? There is one gold mine still working there. They have been trading tin and gold from Cornwall for at least 5,000 years!

Amazing ...

Curious about the steps in the third shot. They look as they were constructed to view the river.

I think the steps were used in the refining of the tin ore back in the old days. I've got some interior shots of the tin mill shaped in the same way? I'll check it out before I make a post on the mine.

This really does look like a fascinating place to visit @molometer Those sculptures are so like like and I am sure the history of the Tolga tin mine is a very interesting one.

I have a lot more information on Tolga and will be posting about the history now I'm home with a decent net connection. It was a fascinating place and the way they worked. Men, Women and children all down the mine and the kids did most of the digging out. The women pulled the trucks in and out of the mine. Hectic times?
