The sky is the expanse of space that appears above us when we look upward from the surface of the Earth.During the day,the sky usually appears blue due to the scattering of sunlight by the Earth's atmosphere.This phenomenon,known as Rayleigh scattering, causes shorter wavelength blue light to scatter more than longer wavelength red light,giving the sky its blue color.However,the sky can display a variety of colors depending on the time of day and atmospheric conditions.During sunrise and sunset,the sky often takes on shades of red,orange,pink,and purple due to the scattering of sunlight at lower angles through more of the Earth's atmosphere.This scattering process is known as Mie scattering and it scatters the longer wavelength red and orange light more prominently.Additionally,the sky can also appear gray or cloudy when it is overcast with clouds.Clouds are formed when water vapor condenses into tiny water droplets or ice crystals in the atmosphere.The composition and thickness of the clouds can affect the appearance of the sky,ranging from light and fluffy white clouds to thick,dark storm clouds.At night,the sky can be a captivating sight,revealing thousands of stars,the moon,and other celestial objects.Away from city lights and light pollution,the night sky can appear dark with a backdrop of stars,and occasional streaks of light from meteors.The moon,depending on its phase,can illuminate the sky with its soft glow.
