Ceglie Messapica è un borgo medievale in provincia di Brindisi, nella regione italiana meridionale della Puglia. È una scoperta affascinante e inaspettata nel territorio della bellissima Valle d'Itria.

Ceglie Messapica è uno dei centri più antichi della Puglia e la sua storia risale ad almeno 15 secoli prima di Cristo; la sua origine è sicuramente preellenica, ma tracce e nuovi reperti, oggi sotto esame, potrebbero risalire a 4.000 anni fa.
Attualmente Pelasgi e Cretesi sono rivali per il titolo di fondatori della città; fecero dell'antica Kailia un importante centro militare e commerciale dei Messapi, per la gente che si insediò tra il mare Adriatico e quello Ionio. In seguito la storia di Ceglie assorbe il dominio latino e romano, la decadenza dell'Impero augusto e l'arrivo dei Comuni.

Sebbene le origini della città si perdano nella notte dei tempi, conserva l'aspetto più tradizionale e conservatore della città: la Chiesa dell'Assunta nota anche come Collegiata dell'Assunta, Il Castello Ducale, ovvero una casa signorile nota per la sua torre alta e la corte interna. Solo alcuni motivi per cui vale la pena visitare il centro storico di Ceglie Messapica.

È stata definita "Città d'arte e terra di gastronomia". Città d'arte per la sua storia millenaria, ancora visibile nel centro storico, dove la Torre dell'Orologio posizionata in Piazza Plebiscito separa l a Ceglie ottocentesca dalla parte medievale. Città d'arte anche per tutti gli elementi che conferiscono a Ceglie Messapica lo stile tipico delle città pugliesi: i vicoli del centro storico, le case bianche, i castelli, i palazzi nobiliari, le chiese affrescate, ma anche i trulli di fama mondiale, che i locali chiamano "casedde" (cioè piccole case).

Terra di gastronomia, invece, per l'ottima cucina, conosciuta e apprezzata in tutta la Nazione. È impossibile rinunciare a mangiare piatti tradizionali e antiche ricette tramandate di generazione in generazione. Ancora oggi, camminando per le strade del centro storico, è facile incontrare donne anziane sedute vicino alle porte delle loro case e preparare la pasta per strada.

Cosa vedere: il centro storico, il Castello Ducale, la Chiesa dell'Assunta, la Torre dell'Orologio, la chiesa di San Rocco, la chiesa di San Domenico, la chiesa di San Gioacchino, l'abbazia di Sant'Anna , il Teatro Comunale, i palazzi storici.

Ceglie Messapica is a medieval town in the province of Brindisi , in the Southern Italian region of Puglia. It is a fascinating and unexpected discovery on ground of the beautiful d’Itria Valley.

Ceglie Messapica is one of the most ancient centres in Puglia and his history goes back to at least 15 centuries before Christ, its origin is surely preHellenic, but traces and new finds, under consideration today, might date back to 4.000 years ago. At present Pelasgi and Cretesi are rivals for the birth certificate of the city; they made ancient Kailia to be an important military and commercial centre of the Messapi, the people who settled between the Adriatic and Ionian seas. Afterward the history of Ceglie absorbs the Latin and Roman rule, the decadance of the august Empire and the coming of the Communes.

Although the origins of the city are lost in the mists of time, it preserve the most traditional, as well as conservative aspect of the town: the Chiesa dell’Assunta also known as the Church of the Assumption, Il Castello Ducale, stately homes known for its high tower, also known as Ducal Castle. Just a few reasons that make it worth to visit Ceglie Messapica Historic centre town.

It has been defined “City of art and Land of gastronomy”. City of art because of its millenary history, still visible in the historic centre, where the Torre dell’Orologio (Clock Tower) of Piazza Plebiscito separates the nineteenth-century from the Medieval part. City of art also for all the elements that lend Ceglie Messapica the typical style of the Apulian towns: the alleys in the historic centre, the white houses, the castles, the noble palaces, the frescoed churches, but also the world-renowned Trulli, which the locals call “casedde” (i.e. small houses).

Land of gastronomy, instead, because of the excellent cuisine, known and appreciated throughout the Nation. It is impossible to give up eating traditional dishes and ancient recipes handed down from generation to generation. Still today, if you walk down the streets of the historic centre, you can see the older women sitting near the doors of their houses and preparing pasta in the street.

Thing to see: the historic center, the Ducal Castle, the Church of the Assumption, the Clock Tower, the church of San Rocco, the church of San Domenico, the church of San Gioacchino, Sant'Anna abbey, the Communal Theatre, the historical Palaces.
