Ciao a tutti,

Hello everyone,
I began a Photo Journey through Italy. I will post one photo every day with a little note of explanation. I hope you like it!

Andrano is a small town in the province of Lecce, in the southern Italian region of Puglia. Towards inland, near to the main centre, there is an area of the town that is part of the national Park of Otranto and Santa Maria di Leuca, a protected environment, rich of species of plants and wildlife.

The origins of Andrano date back to the attacks of the Vandals and Barbarians in the V century when many villages were destroyed, including the Casale Cellino from whose ashes arose the current settlement.

The original name was Andreano and derives from the name Sant'Andrea Apostolo, the patron saint of the town. The Saint is the guardian of the fishermen and evidence traces that the ancient inhabitants had fishing traditions, but had to move inland because of the continuous invasions of the Saracens.

The Castle Spinola-Caracciolo is the summary of the town's history. It dates back to the thirteenth century, then adapted to the new demands of war due to the Turkish invasion of the fifteenth century.
The building has a quadrangular plant, reinforced by towers at the corners of square section. A cornice divides the main floor from the bottom, while the facade retains a caditoia perpendicular to the gateway.
The first architectural layout matches the cylindrical tower, moat and south-west tower (dating back to the sixteenth century).
Over the centuries, when the Saracen scimitars disappeared, the noblemen of the village started to modify the building, to make its appearance more gentle. To that time date back the moldings on the windows with the Latin inscription “Non sine fide”, the Baroque loggia on the main front, marking the transformation of the Castle into a noble residence. Interesting its courtyard with interior staircase and numerous inscriptions.

Among the religious buildings in the historical centre, worth a visit the Saint Dominic’s Church and The Church of Saint Andrew Apostle.

A few kilometres away from the town, it is possible to admire the Church of the Holy Spirit and the rocky Church of Our Lady of Attarico, in which are preserved faint traces of Byzantine paintings.

Nature lovers certainly cannot miss a visit to the Regional Natural Park Costa Otranto which includes other 12 municipalities in Salento besides Andrano.

Thing to see: the Historical centre, the Castle Spinola-Caracciolo, the Saint Dominic’s Church, The Church of Saint Andrew Apostle, the Church of the Holy Spirit, the rocky Church of Our Lady of Attarico, the Regional Natural Park Costa Otranto, the Porto di Ripa Tower, Bacile Palace, the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena.
