Alessano è un piccolo Borgo in provincia di Lecce, nella regione meridionale italiana della Puglia. La fondazione di Alessano ha le sue radici nel mito.

Ancora non è esattamente confermato quando e come è stato fondato il villaggio, ma al riguardo sono state avanzate diverse ipotesi. Secondo Cesare Rao (filosofo e studioso della Comunità di Alessano), il nome del villaggio deriverebbe dalle parole "ale sane", le ali di Dedalo che costruirono il famoso labirinto di Creta.

Alcuni studiosi presumevano che fosse stata fondata dall'imperatore bizantino Alessio I Comneno (1048-1118).
Altri studiosi pensano che i fondatori siano stati i soldati tornati da Alesia in Gallia, o persone provenienti dal fiume "Ales" in Calabria.
Ma l'ipotesi più probabile è che il nome del villaggio derivi dal greco "alexo" che significa "fortificare e proteggere".

Nell'età feudale, e in particolare sotto la dominazione normanna, il centro acquisì un ruolo preminente nel territorio: l'antico borgo ha conservato la sua struttura urbanistica medievale, caratterizzata da piccoli vicoli e strade su cui si affacciano le caratteristiche "case a corte".

Nel XIII secolo fu acquistato da Rodolfo D'Alneto e successivamente da Raimondello Orsini del Balzo. Nei secoli successivi il paese fu governato da Ferrante Gonzaga, i Braydas, i Guarini, da Filiberto d'Ayerbo d'Aragona, da Luisa Riario Sforza e da Antonio Zunica.

Alessano ha anche ospitato, tra il XV e il XVI secolo, una comunità ebraica, che nel 1513 contava 12 famiglie che vivevano in quella che ancora oggi si chiama "Via della Giudecca", nel vecchio quartiere di Santa Maria.

Nel Seicento ad Alessano furono costruite diverse chiese, come quelle di San Giuseppe e dell'Assunta, e venne fondato il monastero dei Padri Cappuccini; esistevano già altri due conventi molto antichi: quello dei Padri Francescani Conventuali e quello di Sant'Angelo, tenuto dai Padri Celestini.
Verso la metà del XVIII secolo, grazie all'iniziativa del vescovo Denis Latomo, fu deciso di costruire una nuova cattedrale.

Il Palazzo Ducale di Alessano, importante centro culturale durante la dominazione dei Gonzaga, è un interessante edificio fortificato con eleganti decorazioni. Il palazzo è stato modificato più volte nel corso dei secoli, in particolare le stanze al piano terra. Ha ancora la sua struttura originale nella parte centrale del piano nobile (piano principale) e nella grande scala adiacente.

Lungo la strada che conduce al meraviglioso litorale di Novaglie, si trova l'insediamento rupestre di Macurano, un villaggio unico in tutto il Salento.
La posizione strategica del borgo medievale, situato al crocevia di numerose vie che collegano Alessano con le città vicine e il mare, spiega l'importanza di questo insediamento, che fu inizialmente abitato da monaci bizantini in fuga dalla lotta iconoclasta.

Alessano is a small town in the province of Lecce, in the southern Italian region of Puglia. The foundation of Alessano has its roots in the myth.

We do not know exactly when and how the village was founded and several hypothesis were advanced. According to Cesare Rao (philosopher and scholar of the Community of Alessano), the name of the village would derive from the words “ale sane”, the wings of Daedalus who built the famous maze of Crete.

Some scholars supposed it was founded by the Byzantine Emperor Alessio I Comneno (1048-1118).
Other scholars think that the founders were the soldiers who came back from Alesia in Gallia, or people coming from the river “Ales” in Calabria.
But the most probable hypothesis is that the name of the village comes from the Greek “alexo” which means “to fortify and to protect”.

In the feudal age, and in particular under the Norman domination, the center acquired a prominent role in the territory: the ancient village has preserved its medieval urban structure, characterised by little alleys and streets on which overlook the characteristics "courtyard houses".

In the 13th century it was bought by Rodolfo D’Alneto then bought by Raimondello Orsini del Balzo. In the following centuries the village was then ruled by Ferrante Gonzaga, the Braydas, the Guarinis, by Filiberto d’Ayerbo d’Aragona, by Luisa Riario Sforza and by Antonio Zunica.

Alessano has also hosted, between the XV and the XVI century, a Jewish communities, which in 1513 accounted for 12 families who lived in that that still today is called "Via della Giudecca", in the old quarter of Santa Maria.

In the seventeenth century for Alessano were built several churches, like those of San Giuseppe and of the Assunta, and founded the monastery of the Capuchin Fathers; already existed two other convents very ancient: that of the Fathers Conventual Franciscans and the Sant'Angelo, held by the Fathers Celestini.
Toward the middle of the Eighteenth century thanks to the initiative of Bishop Denis Latomo ground, it was decided to build a new cathedral.

The Ducal Palce of Alessano, an important cultural centre during the Gonzaga domination, is an interesting fortified building with elegant decorations. The palace has been modified several times over the centuries, especially the rooms on the ground floor. It still has its original structure in the central part of the piano nobile (main floor) and in the large staircase next to it.

Along the road that leads to the amazing seacoast of Novaglie, lies the cave settlement of Macurano, a unique village in the whole of Salento.
The strategic position of the medieval village, located at the crossroads of several routes connecting Alessano with the nearby towns and the sea, explains the importance of this settlement, which was first inhabited by Byzantine monks fleeing from the iconoclastic war.

Thing to see: The Historic Centre, the Mother Church of SS Salvatore, the Ducal Palace, the Church of Sant'Antonio, the Church and monastery of the Capuchin Fathers, the Church of Assunta, the Church of San Giuseppe, the Legari Palace, the Sangiovanni Palace, the cave settlement of Macurano.
