A Journey through Italy: one photo every day #107 - RUTIGLIANO [ENG/ITA]

Rutigliano è un piccolo borgo nella provincia di Bari, nella regione meridionale italiana della Puglia. Nel 2010 ha guadagnato l'appellativo di "Città d'arte" in relazione al suo inestimabile patrimonio storico, artistico e architettonico.

E 'conosciuta anche come "Città dell'uva", per la produzione su larga scala di gustose uve da mangiare e per essere famosa come la capitale dei "fischietti in terracotta", per la produzione di tipici fischietti artigianali, vere e proprie opere d'arte.

L'insediamento normanno fu costruito sul sito dell'antica città di Azetium e tombe risalenti al VI-VII secolo aC sono state scoperte intorno all'area del castello. Appena a nord della città, una sezione dell'acquedotto romano che si estendeva in questa zona rimane ancora intatta.
Il castello dell'XI secolo non è più in piedi, ma ci sono ancora alcuni resti visibili e una torre normanna alta 34 metri, opportunamente restaurata; si compone di diversi livelli fino alla terrazza. Situato nel cortile del Castello, all'ingresso del centro storico, il suo punto più alto offre una vista interessante del paesaggio di Rutigliano.

Nel cuore della città è possibile ammirare la Chiesa Madre dedicata a Santa Maria della Colonna e San Nicola. Questa chiesa risale agli anni precedenti al 1000, successivamente ampliata alla sua forma attuale nel 12 ° secolo. Restaurata più volte, la chiesa millenaria all'esterno conserva l'originale campanile romanico. Molto interessante l'interno a tre navate, dove è possibile vedere l'icona trecentesca della Madonna delle Grazie e alcuni affreschi di grande valore.

Da non perdere il Museo del fischietto che custodisce preziosi manufatti in terracotta e il Museo Civico Archeologico; ricca testimonianza del passato dal Neolitico al Medioevo, il Museo presenta una sezione preistorica che conserva antiche ceramiche e una sezione dedicata all'età classica, dove è possibile ammirare soprattutto i corredi funebri. Ci sono anche alcuni reperti risalenti all'epoca romana e diverse tracce di insediamenti bizantini e longobardi.

Il centro storico è molto interessante grazie agli antichi palazzi impreziositi dai fregi nobiliari e agli edifici religiosi e civili che hanno accompagnato la storia della città.

Merita una visita il Santuario del Santissimo Crocifisso; costruito sulla vecchia chiesa di Sant'Andrea, il santuario al suo interno ospita la scultura del Cristo in Croce di Vespasiano Genuino.

Cose da vedere: Il Centro Storico, la Chiesa Madre di Santa Maria della Colonna e San Nicola, la Torre Normanna, il Museo Civico Archeologico, il Museo dei Fischietti di Terracotta, i palazzi storici, il Santuario del Santissimo Crocifisso, il Museo Capitolare.

Rutigliano is a small town in the province of Bari, in the southern Italian region of Puglia. In 2010 it gained the appellation of "City of art" in relation to its priceless historical, artistic and architectural heritage.

It's also known as "Città dell'uva", for the large-scale production of tasty eating grapes and to be famous as the capital of "terracotta whistles", for the production of typical craft whistles, real works of art.

The Norman settlement was built on the site of the ancient town of Azetium, and tombs dating back to the 6th-7th Century BC have been discovered around the castle area. Just to the north of the town a section of the Roman acqueduct that stretched through this area still remains intact.
The 11th Century castle is no longer standing, but there are several remnants still visible, and a 34m high Norman Tower, properly restored; it consists of several levels up to the terrace. Located in the courtyard of the Castle, at the entrance of the old town, its highest point offers an interesting view of the landscape of Rutigliano.

In the heart of the town it is possible to admire the Mother Church dedicated to Santa Maria della Colonna and San Nicola. This church dates back to pre-1000, subsequently being enlarged to it's current shape in the 12th Century. Restored several times, the millenary church outside maintains the original Romanesque Bell Tower. Very interesting is the interior with a nave and two aisles, where you can see the 14th-century icon of Madonna delle Grazie and some frescoes of great value.

Not to be missed are the Museum of the Whistle that preserves precious terracotta artefacts, and the Civic Archaeological Museum; rich evidence of the past from the Neolithic to the middle ages, the Museum features a prehistoric section which preserves ancient ceramics and a section dedicated to the classical age, where it's possible to admire above all grave goods. There are also some artifacts dating back to Roman times and several traces of Byzantine and Lombard settlements.

The historic centre is very interesting thanks to the old palaces embellished by noble friezes as well as the religious and civil buildings which have accompanied the town’s history.

Worth a visit the Sanctuary of Santissimo Crocifisso; built on the old Sant'Andrea Church, the sanctuary inside houses the sculpture of Cristo in Croce of Vespasiano Genuino.

Thing to see: The Historic Centre, the Mother Church of Santa Maria della Colonna and San Nicola, the Norman Tower, the Civic Archaeological Museum, the Museum of the Terracotta Whistles, the old palaces, the Sanctuary of Santissimo Crocifisso, the Capitular Museum.
