Exploring a haunted abandoned hospital near Berlin: Then playing the ghost piano.

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

I decided to explore one of the world's biggest abandoned hospital complexes, Beelitz-Heilstätten. These hospital grounds have a dark and troubled history. From October to November 1916, Adolf Hitler was a patient here, being treated for a wounded leg — an injury he sustained at the Battle of the Somme.

Beelitz was later used as a Soviet military hospital. Today, the vast hospital buildings are abandoned, and nature is slowly digesting them.

I arrived, with friends, in the snow. Shaking and terrified, we entered the forbidden zone.

As we reached the buildings, we could already hear ghosts screaming. One of them was shouting something about the recent US elections and rattling its chains.

The ghosts told us that this missing piece of railing had been eaten by wolves.

This ceiling had fallen in recently. Another one fell in while we we there.

Seconds after this photo was taken, my friend on the staircase burst into flames. The ghosts said it was a necessary sacrifice.

We pushed onwards deeper into the main hospital building.

Everything felt like it was about to fall apart. It reminded me of childhood.

Personally I felt it was dangerous to rest here, but another friend felt sleepy, so we let him lie down. I have not seen him since this photo was taken. Ghosts? You do the math.

This window told us that we were all going to die, but slowly, over a normal human lifespan. We thanked it for its wisdom.

There were endless corridors everywhere that looked like infinite vortexes. Another friend vanished at this point. I can't even remember their name.

Now, with all my friends dead except one, we opened the door to an old abandoned ballroom and found something special...

Finally, I was playing The Ghost Piano. Every key rang out a desperate, awful cry into the cold air.

I tried to play something light and breezy to calm the ghosts of Beelitz-Heilstätten. I chose Britney Spears' classic Hit Me Baby One More Time, but the ghosts took this opportunity to inform me that the song was actually about the sense of desolation, and hopeless repetition, experienced by a victim of domestic violence. And now, listening more closely to the lyrics, I could see they were right. Everything was terrifying.

My loneliness is killing me
And I must confess I still believe
When I'm not with you I lose my mind
Give me a sign
Hit me, baby, one more time.

Great post. I pretty much like the morbid mood of abandoned places.

Thanks @shortcut! Me too. I like abandoned buildings. They feel so exciting and outside the boundaries of the prescribed urban spaces I'm usually in.

Did the ceiling really collapse while you were there?

Did wolves really eat the railings?

Ceiling: Yes.

Wolves: Unlikely. The cuts are clean. Wolves with angle-grinders?
