Venice by Night photography
Venice is a wonderful city: by day a colourful and lively (albeit touristy) beehive; by night a mysterious, ancient, fascinating and fantastical maze.
(I'm running out of adjectives here, but it can also be a bit creepy, dazzling, confusing, uncanny and unnerving. All at the same time!)
These are some older photo's from my second visit (and I would go back immediately if I had the opportunity..) It was November, not as bustling and hustling as during the summer, and dusk came early:
The Venetian Ghetto, it was getting quite dark actually - but you can only tell by the light in the shops at the background. Good old Fuji 1600 ISO film there.
One of the gazillion canals:
There's research on exactly how many canals there are in Venice - Jan Morris holds it at 177: "with the average width of twelve feet, and the average depth of a fair-sized family bath-tub, [some being] so short that there is only just room for their names on the map.")
And on to the more well-known places: the piazza San Marco at night:
With the Campanile towering alongside of the piazza (and Saturn scarily close to Earth's orbit, there..):
This Campanile, which has been the landmark of Venice thoughout history, was built in 1912, after the previous one (built in 912 - a thousand years earlier!) collapsed in 1902. There's a nice story about that collapse though, but that would be expanding too much here - though do shout out Campanile! in the comments if you really want to hear it.. :)
And, finally, at the Doge's palace, I met this kindred spirit:
An artist at night, in Venice.
Our paths crossed briefly. Sometimes I wonder whether he's still there and if when I go back I will find out. Because Venice is a wonderful city.
By day and very much by night.
Awesome city!
Yes, absolutely fascinating, have you been there?
