Härmälänsaari Boat Harbour + Sauna Raft

DSC_0477

I got some lunch from a supermarket and went down to Lake Pyhäjärvi to shoot this. This was taken at Härmälänranta boat harbour.

Too bad you coudn't buy ice cream.

I'm afraid this boat on a trailer has been left here a bit prematurely. The lake ice is still probably about 20-30 cm thick.

Tampere city centre is on the other side of the lake.

One of many developments on this side of the lake.

This is how they look like on dry land. Those pontoons keep them afloat.

The sun deck is on top of the sauna.

Looks like it's about seven metres long.

That's the temperature of the fire in the stove, not the sauna!

The steering cabin.

On the right hand side you can see Hatanpää botanical garden.

Härmälänsaari Island itself.

That's another sauna. Probably owned by the residents of the buildings nearby. Nearly 100% of the apartments have saunas in the, too, but no lake. Saunas are very important in our culture. Nearly all city apartments built in the 1980's and later have saunas in them.

Lunch is over. Back to the salt mines.

I LOVE saunas! Not as popular over here, as not in every home, but I would love to have one.

You could have one built in your house if one of your bathrooms is spaceous enough or there is an adjacent space capable of being converted into a sauna. That would make sense if that bathroom needed to be renovated soon anyway. But since you were planning to move to South Carolina, you might not need a sauna there so much. :)

Oh, I miss my sauna!! They are not popular here as a household item, but, they should be!

I have thought about adding one here, but, decided the best thing to do it wait for the next house. (there will be a next house) The portable saunas are a far cry from the ones built in the house.

Yes! Back to the salt mines... and then a sauna!

I don't know that the building code in your neck of the woods says about waterproofing bathrooms but if the sauna is adjacent to a bathroom and they share floor, the whole floor (and the walls of the bathroom) must be renovated at the same time according to our code. The waterproofing is done with an elastic mass that hardens as it dries that is applied to the walls on top of which you put plaster and finally the tiles. The whole bathroom except for the ceiling and possible windows has to be seamlessly waterproofed. If you are serious about adding a sauna to a house you're about to buy, you should consult an expert on this matter.

The houses (with saunas) have premade plans by the builder. They are popular on new builds. The only sauna I have had were separate buildings that were near, but not attached to the house.

The one in particular that I was interested in was adjacent to the bathroom. Thanks for the heads up.
