Photography And Electronics gives you....

Hi all

This is a photo that I took using a homemade water drop sensor. The sensor comprises of a photogate hooked up to a 555 timer and a potentiometer to adjust the delay between the water drop breaking the photogate and the flash firing.

The image was taken in the dark with the shutter held open in bulb mode. The 555 timer effectively shorts out across the flash to fire it (a cheap old Vivitar 285), exposing the water drop as it bounces back off the base. The base is a bit of perspex with a black finish on it.

The paint is just watered down acrylic paint. Taking this kind of image can involve a lot of patience and trial and error, plus a lot of cleaning up between shots but the results are pretty good.

what a fabulous natural fractal! You can color me impressed! ... especially since I have no idea what any of your vocabulary words mean :-)

well ok I recognise 3: water, acrylic paints, and Vivitar.

Your setup sounds quite complicated but the result is fabulous! By the way, the splatter looks like a crown 👑 😁
