Afar Triangle
The Afar Depression (also called Danakil Depression or Afar Triangle) is a region of the Horn of Africa, where the African and Arabian tectonic plates are separating, and has its origin in the Great Rift Valley. In this region is the lowest point in all of Africa, Lake Assal, at 155 meters below sea level.
The territory of the depression occupies part of Eritrea, Ethiopia and Djibouti and, although it is an active zone of volcanoes, it is best known for the remains of fossil hominids, among which is Lucy, a specimen of Australopithecus afarensis. The lowlands of the Afar depression are dominated by heat and drought
In the last 200,000 years, the waters of the Red Sea have invaded the depression at least three times, as evidenced by the various strata of salt that can be seen in the steep slopes of the streams. The last of these invasions occurred about 80,000 years ago. The sea invasion of the Afar depression, according to the opinion of the geophysicists, may happen again in the future, forming a new sea.
