Pholiota populnea - Hat. Diameter 6-20 cm. In juveniles it is hemispherical, later it remains convex, and only occasionally in older specimens it becomes flat. It has a color ranging from cream-colored to creamy-brown to reddish-brown. The surface is densely covered with a woolly cover, which in time becomes scaly. In older specimens, the scales remain only at the edge of the hat.

Mushrooms. In youth, gray-beige, then dark gray-brown.

Stem. Height 3-8 cm, thickness 1-3 cm. Typically, the hat is placed on it centrally, but sometimes laterally. It has a woolly ring, the bottom is usually thickened. It has a color a little brighter than the hat, only at the base is ocher-brown. Above the ring is whitish and smooth, below it is covered with woolly scales.

In Central Europe it is quite rare, in Poland as well.

It grows on dead wood of poplars or on live poplars, mainly in riparian forests. He was also noted on white willow and robinia. The fruiting body produces from August to October. They are quite persistent and can survive sometimes until spring of the next year.
