BEFORE & AFTER
My house with cedar shakes painted gray. Then replaced with new and stained clear.
This south side the shingles got paper thin from 70 plus years of sunshine.
Cedar shakes look real good when they first go up. After a short time, when not stained, they darken up and look dreary.

Looks gorgeous now! What a face lift! Yes, the work definitely brightens up the overall feeling and appearance. However.... the plants.... they don't blend in anymore..... maybe some topiary style pruning for the shrubbery.... rock-work ground cover instead of some of the grass.... I don't know - just a thought.... kind of like a new hairstyle after the face lift....
I like things to be as natural as possible. I do have to open things up a bit to get the car in the driveway. lol

They look great, did you try to lighten them up before replacing them? What kind of stain did you use on the new?
They were prestained at the factory. Then restained with a cedar clear stain after a light 50/50 bleach wash a couple of years after installation.
