Someone came to the house a few days ago and mentioned seeing this nest as they walked up the front walk. It's behind the light, so we can't see it from the door!
Yeah I was allergic to them, had two shots in each arm for a few years which they tested and said I was "cured" but still, better to have someone else do it!
I wouldn't do it myself either I used to be allergic to Bee stings quite badly as a child, the Las time i got stung it did react but not as badly as it used to but Iavoid them where ever possible
Yeah it's funny, out in the garden I have no fear at all, plucking suckers off the tomato plants while the bees are pollinating the flowers, or digging the cucumber beetles out of the squash flowers, also with bees buzzing by.
But those are honeybees and bumblebees; I found a very funny (if ribald) post yesterday on categorizing the bees, let me find it; here you go, enjoy! :)
That's a little scary. A swarm attacked my friend after he hit a stump with an axe and it had a beehive inside. He started swelling up so we had to take him to the hospital to get a shot of epinephrine.
Yeah I used to carry an epi-pen so when they jacked the prices up on it recently, I felt it (even though I don't buy them any longer). Was allergic years ago, my throat would swell up when I got stung, so I might have stopped breathing.
Actually there's a funny story about my first sting, I think I'll make that today's post! :)
Yes, thank you! They're yellowjackets, which is a type of wasp. @yaanivapeji also asked (on the other post with this same image, I think -- yes, here), and it's an issue I recognize that I need to fix in my communications.
That's not a bad idea, the smoke -- this is next to the light on the ceiling of the porch, so I wouldn't try gas on them. I'll have someone handle it at night, while I'm not around (used to be allergic, might still be, don't want to take the chance).
No idea. If I was them I think I would have preferred the "shelter" of the other side -- they are on the street side of the porch light, where there is a lot more activity. But then again it's further away, and we only use the front door to get the mail, as the driveway is closer to the back door -- so, they made the right decision! :)
Wow
Cool to see but be very careful taking it down they can be damn ornery and dangerous

At least I don't say they bite! :)
awesome , so cool , thank you so much for sharing
Yikes just readed your next one where you got stong :"'
Yeah that scared me -- and also, prepared me for a lifetime of wordplay! :)
Like, they should first smoke something? Or to pour gasoline? I'm generally very scared of them.

Wasps. Do you know what attracted them to that place?

Hahahahahaha. I would prefer they don't stay anywhere in my house to avoid been stung by mistake.
That is good, you got rid of them
Not yet but soon!
It looked like chocolate.but deadly
Neat, like sax and violins. :)
