I found these beautiful organisms in my yard. But what are they really? Toadstools or mushrooms?
Actually, toadstools and mushrooms are both from the same family: unscientific names to define different varieties of fungus. Mushrooms are usually the edible variety while the toadstool is believed to be inedible and toxic.

Many myths and legends surround toadstools.

Toads are often depicted sitting on top of toadstools; thus their assigned name- toad stools. It was thought that toads carried diseases and where transmitted onto the toadstool when they sat on them.

Fairies and gnomes are often shown in, on, or beside toadstools adding to their mystery.

However, scientifically, there is no real accepted difference between the mushroom and the toadstool. The name mushroom is given to edible fungus and toadstool is given to the inedible. Eating toadstools can be very harmful to humans. Some of the symptoms include nausea, difficulty breathing, confusion, diarrhea, vomiting, and in sometimes, coma resulting in death.

Please be careful when eating wild mushrooms! It is difficult to know which are dangerous and which are delicious.
