RE: Beautiful Japan #41 – 50 :: Collection #5

These are pretty cool pictures, did you take them yourself? My favorite one would be of the old house. It looks so soft though, did you edit it that way?

I would love to go to Japan one day, my husband @matt-a went last fall, and I was babysitting our three cats in the meantime haha and couldn't really get more time off of work back then. Hopefully next time!

Yep, they are all mine. I'll tell you a secret about that old house one. The museum was actually very dark, so I had the ISO of my camera cranked up pretty far. A high ISO is like a slow film back in the day—it lightens up a dark scene, but it adds lots of noise to the picture. I cleaned it up in Photoshop, but in doing so it lost a lot of the detail and gained that soft look.

I hope you can make it here. If you do, try to come in April to catch the cherry blossoms. Tell your husband he owes you a trip!

I see! Yeah grain is a problem in a dark environment! This picture kinda looks like it could be a screenshot from a game too or a painting, I like it.
I would love to go there in spring, I heard that there are cherry blossom celebrations even, it would be amazing to witness the main sakura tree start blooming (I watched a show that said there's a main sakura tree in Kyoto that makes the celebration begin).
Japan seems cool as hell :D

Well, they start in okinawa, actually. As spring progresses, the line moves up to honshu (the main island) and finally up to hokkaido. They have daily sakura forecasts on the news showing exactly where is in bloom and predictions for other places. So the celebration begins at different times in every city. City officials usually have a pretty good idea when they will bloom based on previous years, but they always consult the sakura forecast before scheduling the sakura festival.

There is a hill somewhat near Kyoto that is the source of the wild ancestor to what is the most popular cherry tree today, and that hill is completely covered. That could be what the TV show you watched was referring to. It looks amazing. Search "mount yoshino cherry blossom" in google images to see some amazing photos of it.

I didn't know that, that is pretty cool, also kinda crazy that there are things such as sakura blossom forecasts!
