Japan Photo Blog, Vol. 92 - The (Sub)Culture in the Streets
文化
bunka, "culture."
In any culture, city, or civilization, at least two wavelengths of consciousness can be experienced. On the surface, there is the superficial, and often contrived and synthetic "culture" of any given place. Below that surface though, there is what I consider to be the more genuine culture. That where the minds, expressions, emotions, fears, hopes, angers and dreams of the "average" individual can be felt and experienced.

Interesting to see this side of Japan. The anti-system movement has gone global, i guess. However, in Latinamerica we only get the glamorous, high tech, developed aspect of those cultures.
What happens bellow the surface does not make it to the news.
Even further down, in the slums, there is a cultural richness that only those of us who have been there know it; only those of us who have been with the public on a daily basis. A street artist, who has not been recognized, despised for his attire; there is the value, to extract from the simple the music, the painting, the sculpture, the traditional game, the dances, the sayings; in short, the same daily speech. Long live popular culture....
They make the Japanese smoke outside too! We know the young couple are going to pray in the shrine, right? Funny how the Japanese sub-culture mimics so many other countries' sub-culture...
