[ENG-SPN] From the Architecture of Antonio Palacios / De la Arquitectura de Antonio Palacios

If in Barcelona at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, architects of the stature and genius of Antonio Gaudí stood out, exponents of a very new intellectual movement, called Reinaxança or Catalan Renaissance, that Madrid of the same period, which saw imposing buildings temples with neo-Romanesque characteristics, such as the popular building located on Alcalá Street and dedicated to the figures of San Manuel and San Benito, in honor of the first names of their patrons, Madrid Architecture was notably offset by the figure of a peculiar architect, who, without being as extravagant as Gaudí, also set a standard in his craft: Antonio Palacios.

Palacios, like Gaudí, also made his brilliant forays into previous architectural styles, such as that architecture, elegant and mysterious at the same time, which the no less mysterious author and modern alchemist who went down in history with the pseudonym Fulcanelli, called ' argotic'. And one of his most prodigious works was, without a doubt, the Madrid Telecommunications Palace - currently the headquarters of the city's City Council - which, located in front of the monumental fountain of the Goddess Cybele - a copy of the fabulous sculpture attributed to Phidias - pays homage, in its monumental sculpture, to another of the great Mother Goddesses of Antiquity: the Egyptian Isis.

Si en la Barcelona de finales del siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX, destacaron arquitectos de la talla y genialidad de Antonio Gaudí, exponentes de un novísimo movimiento intelectual, denominado Reinaxança o Renacimiento catalán, aquél Madrid de la misma época, que veía levantarse imponentes templos de características neorrománicas, como el popular edificio situado en la calle de Alcalá y dedicado a las figuras de San Manuel y de San Benito, en honor a los nombres de pila de sus patrocinadores, la Arquitectura madrileña se vio notablemente compensada por la figura de un arquitecto peculiar, que, sin ser tan extravagante como Gaudí, sentó también cátedra en su oficio: Antonio Palacios.

Palacios, como Gaudí, también hizo sus geniales incursiones en estilos arquitectónicos anteriores, como esa arquitectura, elegante y misteriosa a la vez, que, el no menos misterioso autor y alquimista moderno que pasó a la Historia con el pseudónimo de Fulcanelli, denominaba como ‘argótica’. Y una de sus obras más prodigiosas, fue, qué duda cabe, el Palacio de Telecomunicaciones de Madrid -en la actualidad, sede del Ayuntamiento de la ciudad- que, situado enfrente de la monumental fuente de la Diosa Cibeles -copia de la fabulosa escultura atribuida a Fidias- rinde homenaje, en su monumental escultura, a otra de las grandes Diosas Madre de la Antigüedad: la egipcia Isis.
