[ENG-SPN] Medieval pride / Orgullo medieval

In the same way that today, modern and futuristic style bridges, such as the Calatrava bridge, which connects the two banks of the Bilbao estuary, can be considered, with all fairness, works of art of architecture and engineering, also that Middle Ages, which on so many occasions has been presented to us as dark and eminently barbaric, can boast of having built prodigious wonders, whose aesthetics, of course, are impoverished in the face of a technique, rustic but meritoriously outstanding for those times, which is characterized by its solid effectiveness to proudly confront the greatest of all enemies: time.

Pure obstinacy and much more meritorious, even if possible, especially if we take into account that this wonderful prodigy of medieval engineering not only connects the two banks of a river, the Arga, which, at times, roars down and overflows, destroying it. everything in its path, but also continues to serve, year after year and century after century, the abundant traffic of people and pilgrims, who not in vain stop in a city like Puente la Reina, a central and privileged nucleus, where they unite and become one, the various roads that lead to Santiago.

De la misma manera que en la actualidad, puentes modernos y de estilo futurista, como es el de Calatrava, que conecta las dos riberas de la Ría de Bilbao, pueden considerarse, con toda justicia, obras de Arte de la Arquitectura y de la Ingeniería, también esa Edad Media, que, en tantas ocasiones se nos ha presentado como oscura y eminentemente bárbara, puede vanagloriarse de haber levantado prodigiosas maravillas, cuya estética, desde luego, queda empobrecida frente a una técnica, rústica pero meritoriamente sobresaliente para aquellos tiempos, que se caracteriza por su sólida eficacia para enfrentarse con orgullo al mayor de todos los enemigos: el tiempo.

Depurada obstinación y mucho más meritorio, aún si cabe, sobre todo si tenemos en cuenta que este maravilloso prodigio de la ingeniería medieval, no sólo conecta las dos orillas de un río, el Arga, que, en ocasiones, baja rugiendo y desbordado, arrasándolo todo a su paso, sino que, además, continúa sirviendo, año tras año y siglo tras siglo, al abundante tráfico de personas y peregrinos, que no en vano, recalan en una ciudad como Puente la Reina, núcleo central y privilegiado, donde se juntan y se hacen uno, los diversos caminos que conducen a Santiago.
