Steemit still confuses me a lot!

These are colored macaroni, we used these in our lesson in Biology. After our lesson, my students created this heart for this coming Valentine's Day! So sweet of them.

I just joined Steemit three days ago. I've read a lot of things about it but still there are things that I cannot fully understand? Can you please help me answer the following questions:
1. How can I increase my followers?

2. Is it really necessary to buy steemit power?

3. Are there steemians here who are willing to guide me on how things work here?
